Access Statement

Thorpe Cottage is a 1 bedroom cottage close to a shop, post office, pubs and a restaurant.
Haddon Hall, Chatsworth House, Monsal Trail and Bakewell are within a few miles of Ashford.
Buxton is 10 miles to the north and Matlock is 10 miles to the south on the A6
The cottage is entered through a small gate where there is a small garden with seating, facing west.

Living area

On entering the cottage there is a step down into a small lobby with a sharp turn into the living area. This is a low beamed room with an original fireplace along with a gas fired Coalbrookdale cast iron stove and central heating. There is a 2 seater Ercol settee and 2 Ercol easy chairs, as well as a window seat and low occasional table. Electronics include a TV, DVD player. Information can also be found about the area, walks and other local places of interests.

Kitchen

A step takes you up into the kitchen/dining area which contains: a cooker, a washer/dryer, a fridge. There is also a pine table with chairs and a Welsh dresser which displays all crockery. Pans can be found underneath the sink, and cutlery is in the drawer of the Welsh Dresser. There are separate hot and cold taps, with thermostatically controlled hot water. The work surface is Formica with a stainless steel sink. There is a door out into the back yard, where washing can be dried. Cycles can be brought into the back yard, and stored in a secure shed. A room off of the living area which can also be used to dry wet clothing.

Bedroom

The bedroom is reached by a winding staircase – there are about 12 wedge shaped steps, and great care is advised when ascending or descending the stair, although there is a banister rail. There is: a double bed, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, a cheval mirror, a wooden chair, a TV with a remote control, some bedside cupboards and lights either side of the bed, extra blankets are available if needed. Please note that the bedroom is not suitable for wheel chair users – access is not possible.

Bathroom

Also upstairs is the bathroom which contains a bath and shower as well as a bath, toilet and washbasin. There is a mirror over the sink. There is also: a towel rail, hooks for hanging clothes, a shelf for toiletries and a wicker shelf unit. There is a vinyl floor, giving the advantage of extra cleanliness, however clean bathmats are also provided for every new visitor as well as towels. Great care should be taken when using the bathroom, especially during the night, as the stairs are immediately in front of the bedroom door. It is advisable to keep the landing light on at all times.

Nearby Shop

There is a village shop 50 yards away from the cottage, on the corner of Greaves Lane which is open from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM 7 days of the week. It sells a wide variety of goods, including: daily papers, telephone top-ups, coffee, sandwiches, ice cream and also offers delicatessen products.

Extra Information

  • There is a fire alarm on top of the stairs – a loud buzzer would alert guests – as well as a fire alarm in the living room between the living area and kitchen
  • A fire blanket and extinguisher can be found in the kitchen
  • Torch for a emergency is located in the Kitchen and Bedroom 
  • No dogs, please
  • No smoking, please
  • Cars can be parked almost opposite the cottage on Greaves Lane
  • Babies in cots are welcome, but small children are discouraged due to the nearness of the road
  • Great care should be taken when exiting the cottage gate, as you are immediately on the road
